Sheikh Rashid Says 36,000 Named in May 9 Cases, 25,000 Still Absconding

ISLAMABAD: Former Interior Minister and chief of the Awami Muslim League, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, stated that a total of 36,000 individuals have been nominated in the May 9 cases, with the Supreme Court directing that their trials be concluded within four months. However, out of these, 25,000 accused are currently absconding.

Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Sheikh Rashid remarked, “In my lifetime, it’s not possible to decide the cases of 36,000 accused. I have taken a political fast, and I know when I will break it.”

He emphasized the importance of timing in politics, saying, “Choosing the right time and making the right decision is crucial in politics. I will break my political fast when the time is right.”

It is worth noting that just a few days after the events of May 9, 2023, Sheikh Rashid had termed them the darkest day for both himself and PTI Chairman Imran Khan, stating in an interview that the incidents were Imran Khan’s biggest political mistake.

In an appearance on Samaa TV’s program Mere Sawal with Muneeb Farooq, Sheikh Rashid revealed that he had been on a 40-day spiritual retreat with the Tablighi Jamaat. “I spent time studying the Quran, and God gave me the opportunity to devote myself to His word. I ignored the news and focused on spiritual growth,” he said.

When asked about the retreat, he responded, “It was a tough spiritual exercise that had a significant impact on my health. It was a time of silence, worship, and connection with God during the pre-dawn prayers.”

Sheikh Rashid also mentioned that he had not informed his close aides, Sheikh Rashid Shakir and Sheikh Shakir, about his retreat. “They were worried about me, but I couldn’t tell them earlier. I informed them yesterday that my 40-day retreat has ended, and we met today,” he concluded.
